Lo squadrismo al potere. La parabola di Roberto Farinacci
2019
Memoria e ceto politico a Palermo
2019
During Mussolini's dictatorship, the concept of squadrismo was an essential aspect of the Fascist identity. Squadrismo was widespread in Central and Northern Italy in particular, and certain cities in the South subsequently resorted to fabricating their own squadrist myths and traditions. This essay focuses on the case of Palermo. The relationship between the fascist squads' origins and certain local leaders' life histories is underlined. More specifically, an attempt is made to show how Palermo had more "political" prefects than many other Italian provinces. As Fascism emerged later in the South than elsewhere in Italy, the local party hierarchies had not taken part in the original Fascist…
The shifting evocations of squadrismo: remembering the massacre of Palazzo d'Accursio in Fascist Bologna
2016
The massacre of Palazzo d’Accursio is considered one of the first events in the rise of the Fascist squads. This article analyzes the ways in which the event was described in Bologna during the twenty years that followed it. It is believed that in the first few years, commemorations that emphasized the role of the Fascist squads were not very common. Instead, they concentrated on the life of Giulio Giordani, a murdered lawyer and opposition councilor, who became a martyr. Members of the city’s ruling class, especially lawyers, developed their own rituals of commemoration, but the establishment of the regime led to the acquisition of the commemorations of Giordani by Fascism, reflecting the …

Dimenticare il Balkan. La distruzione del Narodni Dom di Trieste nelle rielaborazioni fasciste (1921-1941)
2016
On July 13th 1920, in Trieste, the fascists destroyed a building known as «Balkan», an outpost of the Slovenian community. This essay studies the symbolic legacy of that assault, as it was one of the first fascist squads actions in Italy. The memory of the «Balkan» is analysed through its connections with important squads leaders’ careers, the effects of Trieste’s urban expansion and the fascist cult of the fallen «squadristi». The timeline of this study stretches until the Second World War, when the fascists attack on the Slovenian and Croatian population hit a new peak.

Lo squadrismo
2022
The essay sets out to analyse the genesis of fascist squadrismo, the wave of violence that brought Mussolini to power in 1922. Three levels in particular will be considered. Firstly, an attempt will be made to measure the impact of that violence through the incidence of certain crimes. Then, we will focus on the words used to describe it and the advent of the word 'squadrism'. finally, the fascist memory of squadrism, maintained and elaborated throughout the twenty-year period, will be considered
